This is a unique international course of intensive study for undergraduate and graduate business and risk management students, a distinctive immersion in the field of Global Risk Management and Insurance. The course is designed to study how risk is transferred globally. During the classes in Denver, there will be a series of class lectures, presentations, and discussions.  The class will then travel to London, which is the home to many of the world’s largest insurers and reinsurers.  While in London for one week, students will visit and have presentations from insurance brokers, companies, Lloyds of London, and reinsurers.

The overriding design of the course is to follow the insurance transaction from main street U.S.A. through the standard markets, surplus lines markets, and reinsurance markets.

  • This class will incorporate dynamic guest speakers both locally & in London.
  • Students will see first-hand how risk is transferred globally.
  • Students will interact with insurance professionals who transact business throughout the world.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Become aware of global insurance issues
  • Develop confidence and ability to interact with high-level executives
  • Comprehend and articulate the scope of global risk insurance
  • Prepare to step into a risk manager’s role

Travel Cost: $700* 

$700* – CU Denver degree-seeking students: RMI majors, minors, specializations, or certificate students

$ 1,700* – other CU Denver degree-seeking students & CU Denver non-degree RMI Certificate students

* Includes shared accommodation, ground transportation, some meals, tours & international health insurance. Does not include airfare, tuition, fees, most meals & incidentals.

Travel to London is optional for the course. Without travel, course grade with be determined solely on the Denver portion of the course.

Prerequisites:

Required: Completion of at least one three-credit RISK course.  You may enroll in the prerequisite in Fall 2023 if you have not already met this requirement.

Credits:

3 CU Denver graduate/undergraduate credits
The course may substitute for:
     – International Perspectives core course – major / minor                                       – General Elective – Finance / RMI Major
     – International Elective – MBA
     – “1” Category of electives for all specializations of MS – Finance and Risk Management

Travel Application Deadline & Acceptance: 

Accepted on a rolling basis until the course is full.  Space for travel is limited to 16 students.  Upon acceptance for the London trip, the course fee is due.  Don’t miss out!
