RISK 3809: Introduction to Risk Management

Eric Reiner – online     

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of risk and risk management for businesses and individuals. Corporate risk management techniques covered range from insurance to enterprise risk management. Personal risks discussed range from unemployment to retirement. Insurance carrier operations are also considered.
Corequisite: FNCE 3000, junior/senior standing

RISK 4509: Global Risk Management

John Wethey – T 6:30-9:15 pm    

A distinctive immersion to explain how risk is transferred globally, through standard insurance markets, surplus lines markets, Lloyds of London and reinsurers.  Includes optional travel to London, which is the home to many of the world’s largest insurers and reinsurers.  Prereq: one 3-credit RISK course

RISK 4609: Claims Management

Cindy Baroway – MW 2:00-3:15 pm    

This course will provide an overview of the claims process in the Property and Casualty Insurance world. Students will learn about basic claims handling for personal and commercial claims as well as how to determine coverage and legal issues. 

RISK 4809: Property & Casualty Insurance

Angela Blair – online

Students learn the fundamentals and uses of personal and commercial and property casualty insurance, including cost and pricing issues. Insurance company financial management and current trends in the insurance industry are also explored. Junior/senior standing or instructor permission.

RISK 4909: Corporate Risk Management

Jeungbo Shim – online

This course provides an overview of the corporate risk management process. It considers the ways companies identify their risk exposures, the tools used to measure and mitigate those exposures including the latest developments in alternative risk transfer, and ultimately, how risk management adds value to the firm.
Prerequisite: RISK 3809, Corequisite: FNCE 3500 or instructor permission

This course prepares students for advanced work in insurance and risk management.  The course first covers the nature of risk and risk fundamentals, insurer operations and insurance regulation.  It then considers the principal techniques of managing risk exposures and the basis of decision-making in the management of business and personal risks.  Concurrent: BUSN 6640

RISK 6509/4509: Global Risk Management in London

Study abroad in Maymester 2018

This is a unique international course of intensive study for undergraduate and graduate business and risk management students, a distinctive immersion in the field of Global Risk Management and Insurance. The course is designed to study how risk is transferred globally. In the first two weeks of class in Denver, there will be a series of class lectures, presentations and discussions.  The class will then travel to London, which is the home to many of the world’s largest insurers and reinsurers.  While in London for one week, students will visit and have presentations from insurance brokers, companies, Lloyds of London, and reinsurers.

Course Objectives

The over-riding design of the course is to follow the insurance transaction from main street U.S.A. through the standard markets, surplus lines markets, and reinsurance markets.

  • This class will incorporate dynamic guest speakers both locally and in London.
  • Students will see first-hand how risk is transferred globally.
  • Students will interact with insurance professionals who transact business throughout the world.

Learning Outcomes

  • Become aware of global insurance issues
  • Develop confidence and ability to interact with high-level executives
  • Comprehend and articulate the scope of global risk insurance
  • Prepare to step into a risk manager’s role

Cost: $1,200

Includes airfare, shared accomodation, ground transporation & international health insurance. Does not include tuition and fees.

Prerequisites

Required: Completion of at least one RISK course
Preferred: RMI declared major /minor/specialization, attendance at one RMI Shadow Day

RISK 4709: Life & Health Insurance

This course introduces students to life and health insurance concepts and policy types, with an emphasis on insurance planning for individuals and businesses. The insurance industry and trends within it are also explored.
Pre-requisites: FNCE 3000 and RISK 3809 with a grade of at least a C.

RISK 1000: Introduction to Careers in Risk Management and Insurance

This course introduces students to the many and varied career opportunities in the risk management and insurance industry via visiting industry professionals and on-site industry visits.
This course meets 1 hour each week. It is pass/fail.

RISK 6309: Strategic Risk Management
John Daley – Online

Strategy charts the course of the firm from the present into the future. Strategic risk management seeks to manage the risks to that strategy. Sounds simple, until you realize that many of those risks are either unknown or unknowable. Managing them requires a new set of tools – the subject of this course.
